ART AND NATURE:
MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN AND THE ILLUSTRATION OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
THURSDAY, APRIL 30 @ 6:30 PM
Join us from the comfort of your home for a Zoom lecture by Dr. Kay Etheridge, Professor of Biology Emeritus at Gettysburg College and a founding editor of the Brill book series, Emergence of Natural History.
Maria Sibylla Merian (German, 1647-1717) published the first natural history book to consider ecologically related flora and fauna. Her beautiful images of plants and insects has led history to label her as a highly skilled artist who painted and etched natural history subjects. But she was also the first person to spend decades scientifically studying the relationships between insects and plants.
In this online event, Dr. Kay Etheridge will explore how Merian used her art to capture what she learned from her extensive scientific studies and how she influenced those who followed her.
This event will be held online via Zoom and is free and open to the public, but registration to receive the link is required.
